History of the English Language
Evolution from Old English to what is today's Modern English - Global English
Old English: Also known as Anglo-Saxon - the oldest version of English language. This period lasted from the 5th to early 11th centuries. Old English had complex word forms, heavily inflected grammar and a vocabulary primarily derived from Germanic languages.
Middle English: Middle English is a form of the English language that was spoken after the Norman Conquest of 1066, until the late 15th century. It was the transition period between Old English and Modern English. Middle English was influenced by Old English, French and Latin.
Early Modern English: The period from 1500-1700 is often called Early Modern English. The printing press was introduced to England during this period, which led to the standardisation of spelling and grammar. The language of this period is also known as Renaissance English and Shakespeare's English.
Late Modern English: The period from late 18th century to present day. The explosion of new words in the latter part of the 20th century was driven by the development of computer technology. The internet also led to the creation of many new words, such as "online" and "selfie".
Please note that the concept of "Global English" can vary widely depending on individual perspectives, as English is spoken with diverse accents across the world. While it often refers to standard British or American English, it also encompasses various native and non-native English accents used globally
